News Change to eSnipe Member Terms

[Posted on Sunday, December 11, 2011 00:00]

We are preparing a new version of eSnipe. We are making the following change to the membership terms.

  1. Omitting the second sentence Under Fees and Services. The text goes from "We may in our sole discretion change some or all of our services at any time. Any such changes will be announced at least 14 days in advance. " to "We may in our sole discretion change some or all of our services at any time." In other words, we don't promise to announce new services two weeks in advance.

Why make that relatively minor change? In practice, we have never violated it and probably never will. However, vast swaths of eSnipe's business practice, phraseology, and even text have been lifted wholesale from our site by many of our competitors. In a time of increased competition, we want the flexibility to debut new services without alerting our competitors.

  2. Change title from Member Terms to Terms of Service. This conforms with modern naming practices.

News Memorial Day 2011

[Posted on Monday, May 30, 2011 00:00]

This is Memorial Day in the United States, a holiday commemorating the war dead. We at eSnipe remain eternally grateful for those who gave their lives to let us continue the remarkable experiment called The United States of America. Memorial Day was first observed by freed slaves after the Civil War, so it is a doubly important time to remember. Have an awesome barbecue today, but we hope you take a silent moment to thank those who paid the ultimate price to keep the fabric of our lives together.

News eSnipe's Partial Outage the Morning of May 6, 2011

[Posted on Thursday, May 05, 2011 00:00]

Early in the morning of May 6, some of eSnipe's servers stopped functioning, including the one that displays the home page. eSnipe has many servers, separated by both geography and function. When the eSnipe home page is down, as happened this morning, it doesn't mean the site is gone. While hundreds of bids were missed (and we apologize profusely for that) other servers were still very much alive placing bids. Of course without access to the home page you wouldn't be able to cancel bids, but at least sniping was still active for most users.

Some of you looked up the whois records for eSnipe and called the only number shown, which is my private cell number. I'm delighted to answer, and the first such call alerted me to the problem. I am pondering a better use of the whois information to make emergency contact more reliable. eSnipe doesn't have phone support, but it might be useful in similar cases in the future.

News Auction Sniper Skilz: Use Bid Groups To Do Judo on eBay

[Posted on Thursday, April 28, 2011 00:00]

We've posted a video to YouTube on how to use multiple eBay listings for the same kind of item to your advantage. Bid Groups lets you place bids on multiple similar items. As soon as one of them wins, the other bids are deleted.
